Questions and answers

Everything parents and students ask most, from passports to packing.

Before you go

01Do I need a passport?

Yes. A valid U.S. passport is required for travel.

02What type of passport is needed, and when should I apply?

Each participant needs a valid U.S. passport good through January 30, 2028. Processing can take up to 3 months, so this is an important step to take early. The cost of your passport is not included in the cost of the trip.

03Are any vaccinations required or recommended?

No, none are required or recommended. We do recommend bringing mosquito repellent, such as bracelets, patches, or sprays.

04What medications should I bring?

Bring any over-the-counter and prescription medications you take regularly, in their original bottles with the team member's name clearly labeled, not in a pill organizer. Medication that is not clearly labeled can cause delays in travel and could keep a team member from continuing.

Vitamins and supplements should also be in original, labeled containers. Pack all medications in your carry-on.

Getting there and staying

05Where do teams stay?

Our team stays at International Camp Castillo del Rey AG on Lake Coatepeque, hosted by Don and Terri Triplett. Teams go straight from the airport in San Salvador (SAL) to the King's Castle International Training Center, which has 500 beds, kitchen facilities, and an on-site medical clinic.

Students will serve alongside King's Castle local teams all over El Salvador in schools and communities.

06What is the climate like? What time zone is it?

The temperature is similar to South Louisiana. We will be going during the rainy season, so expect spontaneous afternoon and evening showers; teams usually still do ministry when it rains. A rain jacket and sandals are helpful. There is no air conditioning in the dorms, so bring a fan if needed.

El Salvador is in the same time zone as Louisiana. No jet lag!

07What type of electrical plugs are there?

The King's Castle camp has the same type of plugs we do. You are welcome to bring a power strip, since there are not many outlets in the dorms.

08What is the dress code?

Ministry team participants dress modestly at all times: no v-necks, thin-strap or midriff shirts, and no short shorts. Mid-thigh-length shorts, at least 2 inches past the fingertips, are appropriate for both women and men.

During church and ministry times, women wear skirts below the knee with bike shorts underneath, and men can wear long pants. No clothing should be tight or revealing. Sports bras and yoga pants are only allowed if completely covered by a long t-shirt.

Bathing suits must be modest, one-piece with no cut-outs, or covered with a t-shirt at all times. No Speedos for men.

Money and staying in touch

09How much money should I send with my student?

Around $100 is recommended for souvenirs, travel meals, offerings, and snack stops, more or less depending on your student's spending habits. El Salvador uses U.S. currency, so send $20 bills or smaller, printed in 2009 or later.

10Should I get my student an international phone plan?

We recommend that students unplug on this trip. There is WiFi at the camp that can be used in the evening to FaceTime family with updates, a leader will be able to call home in an emergency, and we will have a GroupMe for parent updates.

Ministry, health, and safety

11Who will we be ministering to?

King's Castle's goal is to reach every child in El Salvador each year with the Gospel message. Most of our ministry efforts will be geared toward children, and we will also have the opportunity to pray with their families.

12What happens if my child becomes ill on the trip?

First, pray always. King's Castle has a medical facility on site that will work with our team on any medical issues that arise. If something comes up that the on-site clinic cannot handle, we will work with our AGWM missionaries to locate the proper facilities.

Teams from across the globe have served at King's Castle for more than 40 years, so caring for a sick team member is a situation that has been handled many times.

13What is the address and phone number of King's Castle in case of an emergency?

4684 Calle Lago de Coatepeque, Potrerillos de la Laguna, El Salvador

  • Ministry office landline: +503 2243 7126 (Castillo del Rey AD main administrative line)
  • Camp ground direct line: +503 2681 0633 (direct number for the Coatepeque camp site)
  • International association mobile and WhatsApp: +503 7838 2910 (Asociación Internacional Castillo del Rey)

Rest assured that our team works with both the El Salvador Assemblies of God executive board and local and national emergency administration in case of an emergency.

14How can I see what the team is doing in El Salvador?

King's Castle posts videos, news, and updates at kingscastle.org/news-updates.
